Faster, Higher, Stronger

The shadow of an ice speed skater is seen on an open air track.

At the risk of sounding like The Sports Channel, we are breathlessly awaiting the opening of the 2022 Winter Olympics. For us, there is no greater thrill than watching elite athletes compete on the world’s largest and oldest stage. The first Olympics took place in 776 BC. Now that’s staying power.

For sixteen days, we set aside politics and disasters to focus on the Olympic spirit, when nations come together to showcase their athletes. Olympians deserve our respect and admiration. Case in point: USA speed skater Brittany Bowe gave her spot to skater Erin Jackson. Bowe won the trials, but Jackson is the top ranked skater in this event. One mistake took her out of the running. Bowe asserted that it was “the right thing to do” and “improves our chances of winning a Gold.”

If you want better functioning teams, immerse yourself in the Olympics. Listen to what the coaches say and watch how they treat their athletes. Then apply their best practices to instill a sense of mission and cooperation in your players. February 4th – 20th is the time to rekindle your Olympic flame. The goal is not to win medals, but to strive for how your business can run faster than your competitors, lift your teams higher, and strengthen your sense of purpose.
