Last week, in a training for female leaders at Glidewell Dental, we were discussing the necessity of building professional networks. One attendee was spot-on when she described effective networking as similar to a ‘first date.’
Remember one of your first dates? Your senses were alert; your curiosity was piqued; and you had no shortage of questions to fuel conversation. That is precisely the frame of mind that will make you a terrific networker.
Before you go to the next business or networking event, embrace a curious mind-set. Wade into conversations and assume you will be welcomed and included. People love talking about themselves and their work. Your job is to ask them questions that bring out what they enjoy or is important to them. There’s no better way to get a second date.
